The Day after the Bob Marley concert … Although only 3, Emily has a sense she has witnessed something great, something that one day she would like to be part of. She is intrigued by her fathers’ bluesy ramblings on their old Ronish Piano and the strange notations of the music from which he read. Emily asks for music lessons. Emily gets Ballet lessons instead … but she was pretty happy about that. 1981 … Kate and Jeff decide to travel to Europe with Emily and Holly. 7 extraordinary months, living in the back of a camper van, Emily travels from the UK to the Arctic Circle and just about everywhere in between. Emily gets back from Europe and casually pops the question again about the music lessons. No luck, but she does get to join the local hockey club, beginning a startling career of 4 years in which she scored a total of 1 goal. 1982 … Emily starts school in Pithara, a tiny wheatbelt town 8km east of her 5000 acre farm. With a total school population of 30 something kids, the music program was not exactly first class – but she did manage to scam a recorder, not exactly what she had in mind. Piano Lessons still not happening – but Emily does get to join the Swimming Club and become a key player for the towns’ Basketball team. 1987 … Two wins, Em gets another legendary sister Bonnie Joy, and Mum and Dad buy her a new piano … a whopping great Yamaha upright grand … very nice. Emily discovers if she’s practicing, she greatly increases her chances of not having to do sheep work. Emily practices a lot! Emily gets Piano Lessons … alright! Under the guidance of teacher Ros Shaw, she swiftly embarks of the AMEB program and canes a couple of exams. She begins what would become years of performing in various festivals and Eistedfodds. 1991 … With no choice but to go to Boarding School, Emily auditions for a Council Music Scholarship and is successful. Her winnings included lessons from prestigious teacher and concert pianist Pauline Belviso. 1993 … Emily’s music class who managed to get out of a lot of work and do a lot of singing get selected to perform at the Sydney Opera House for the International Music Eistedfodd. Aside from gaining a silver medal, the highlight was singing for their supper at Circular Quay, making a total of $4.30 … they were very good! 1994 … Emily is accepted to study a Bachelor of Music Education at Perth’s Conservatorium of Music, studying alongside such musical greats as flautist Jacqueline Pokorny (who would later become Idle’s bass player). 1996 … Emily’s discovered her passion is performance and doesn’t want to leave the Con to begin the education side of her degree. She transfers to a Diploma of Performing Arts, specialising in Classical and Jazz Piano.
